What you'll need to know about Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch

The Tunisian Double Stitch (TDC) is an easy-to-make stitch that creates a fabric with a more open texture compared to other basic Tunisian stitches that drapes well and does not curl. Though the fabric is still thicker than regular double crochet fabric due to the nature of Tunisian crochet, where you have multiple loops on the hook for each stitch, it is still less dense or stiff than other stitches. If you have mastered traditional crochet's double crochet stitch (US patterns), which goes by single crochet stitch (US patterns), you will undoubtedly enjoy the Tunisian double crochet stitch.

If you are considering exploring Tunisian crochet or have worked on a few projects, you have surely realized that it's a unique craft that combines the art of knitting and crocheting. Though you work with Tunisian crochet hooks (generally longer than traditional crochet hooks that are worked with the option of an interchangeable cord), you work like knitting, picking stitches in one row (forward pass) and working them in the following row (return pass). The stitches you make look knitted but are uniquely crocheted as you create loops of yarn with the hooks. Tunisian double crochet stitch is a perfect mix of knit-crochet technique and appearance.

Mastering this stitch opens up a world of possibilities for your crochet creations, whether you're making scarves, blankets, or garments.

You can easily explore this unique stitch when you've mastered the basic Tunisian crochet stitches, such as the Tunisian Simple Stitch and Tunisian Knit and Purl Stitch

Steps of Crafting Tunisian Double Crochet

Here's a step-by-step guide to work on the Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch.

Step 1: Work on the Foundation

Begin with at least 20 chains or, as desired, on a Tunisian crochet hook. Remember to chain one more than that count to achieve the desired number of double crochet stitches in the row. For example, if you aim for 20 stitches, make 21 chain stitches.

Step 2: Make the Forward Pass

Yarn over (YO) the hook and insert into the back loop of the second chain. YO and draw up a loop (three loops on the hook); YO again and draw up a loop through each of the two loops on the hook. Now, you will have two loops on the Tunisian crochet hook.

Continue the steps to the end of the chain.

Step 3: Make the Return Pass

Yarn over (YO) once more and chain through the second row's first loop (the loop you added or cast on your hook). YO and draw up a loop through the next two loops on your hook. Now work across the entire row until only one loop remains on the hook.

The reverse pass is now complete. Before commencing the subsequent forward pass, chain 2 (CH2).

Step 4: Work the Forward Pass of the Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch (TDC)

YO, then pull up through one stitch, YO again, and draw up a loop through two stitches by inserting the hook into the vertical bar in the row below the YO. Continue from * until the end of the row.

Pull up a loop and insert the hook into the last two visible vertical bars to complete the stitch.

Use these bars as your final stitch to conclude the row.

Step 5: Work the Return Pass of the Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch (TDC)

YO and draw up a loop through the first loop on your hook. YO and pull through the next two loops on your hook. Repeat across the row until only one loop remains on the hook. Then CH2 before starting the next forward pass.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 till you have achieved the desired measurements.

With these steps, you can work on the Tunisian Double Crochet Stitch. Choose to work on shawls and scarves. You can also put it to use for cardigans/ sweaters. If you want to work on summer Tunisian projects, the stitch pattern lends itself beautifully.
